Today, the Ontario Ministry of Health announced future scope of practice expansions for several regulated health professionals, including physiotherapists.
The Ministry has directed the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario to start developing the regulatory framework to support qualified physiotherapists in ordering certain X-rays and a diagnostic ultrasound.
The College welcomes this announcement, and we look forward to sharing more information as it becomes available.
No changes to scope of practice have been made yet.
We thank the Ministry of Health and the Ontario Physiotherapy Association for their ongoing collaboration. Please continue to check our website, newsletters and social media for updates.

I believe that as a physiotherapist we have enough knowledge and understanding to allow us to order necessary imaging as needed .
I have encountered situations where pt have had a injury and with intense swelling and discomfort they have come straight to PT whitout wanting to check with family doctor thinking it would take lot of time but eventually I had send the person to dr to get request for imaging to rule out fracture which would be great if I could have done directly
This is wonderful news! It has been a long time coming, and I am looking forward to hearing about the next steps required for this process to reach fruition.
I support the expansion of our scope of practice
Would love to see more scope for Physiotherapist role to be able to order imaging only if needed as it is important to avoid unnecessary imaging.
Hoping that the Physiotherapy role continues to evolve as a primary point of contact for pain assessment and treatment to avoid unnecessary pain medications and complications like GI bleed.
