More New Standards Coming Into Effect
The following updated standards have been approved by the College Board and will go into effect on November 1, 2024:
(this will replace the Restricted Titles, Credentials and Specialty Designations Standard)
These updated requirements must be followed by all physiotherapists and physiotherapist residents. Please take some time to ensure you’re familiar with them.
To further support your understanding, we’ll send you another email on October 31 with the top five highlights from each of the updated standards.

Jurisprudence Module Now Open
The 2024 Jurisprudence Module is now open.
All physiotherapists who registered for Independent Practice between September 26, 2023 and September 25, 2024 are required to successfully complete the online module, along with any PTs who have not done Jurisprudence in the last five years.
If you are required to complete Jurisprudence this year, you should have received emails from the College. Please monitor your inbox and check your junk folder. If you fall within the parameters mentioned above and haven’t received communication from us, please contact jurisprudence@collegept.org.
Case of the Month: What Happens If You Don’t Complete Jurisprudence?
By testing a physiotherapist’s understanding of standards, legislation and rules related to practice in Ontario, the Jurisprudence Module is one of the ways the College ensures physiotherapists have sufficient knowledge to deliver safe and high-quality care.
So what happens if you don’t complete Jurisprudence when you’re required to? We explore the consequences for one PT in the latest Case of the Month.
Featured Standard: Communication
This standard came into effect on August 1, 2024.
It requires physiotherapists to communicate professionally, clearly, effectively, and in a timely manner to support and promote quality physiotherapy services.
Top five highlights from the Communication Standard:
- Avoid disrespectful, dishonest, or misleading communication.
- Engage in active listening.
- Communicate with everyone in the circle of care, including patients, team members, and caregivers.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Document all communications accurately, clearly, professionally, and in a timely manner. Make sure you review the full Communication Standard.
Read Our Annual Report
Our 2023-2024 Annual Report is now available.
Over the past year, the College has worked hard to deliver on our mission to serve the public interest. Here’s some of what we’ve accomplished:
- Scaled the Ontario Clinical Exam up to four administrations per year to continue to ensure a smooth path to licensure
- Released new resources to support physiotherapists, including six e-learning modules focused on transitioning to practice in Ontario
- Developed an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion strategy to guide future work
- Continued to collaborate and do outreach with physiotherapists, the public and system partners
Explore the full report to learn more about what we’ve been up to over the past year, along with some of what’s planned for the future.
Ontario Physiotherapy Association Scope of Practice Survey
In 2009, the Ontario government expanded physiotherapy scope of practice to include ordering diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests. However, the government never created the regulations that would allow physiotherapists to actually do this.
The Ontario Physiotherapy Association (OPA) is inviting PTs to participate in a survey that will inform the association’s submission to the province on this issue.
Specifically, the survey seeks to learn about:
- Current practices of physiotherapists relating to ordering diagnostic imaging and laboratory
tests - Physiotherapists’ attitudes towards implementation of scope of practice changes to permit
these activities
Respiratory Illness Season Resources
November marks the start of respiratory illness season in Ontario, when pathogens like influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID-19 circulate in higher numbers.
In this month’s blog, we go over some resources and guidance to help you protect yourself, your patients and your colleagues.
Consultations: Business Practice Standards
Consultations are now open for the following proposed standards:
- Advertising and Marketing
- Documentation
- Funding, Fees and Billing
Your feedback is important. Your input will shape how these standards are developed and ultimately, what the expectations for Ontario physiotherapists look like in the future.
The consultation period will close on Sunday, November 24, 2024.
Welcome New Registrants
The College would like to welcome our newly registered physiotherapists.
Myth vs Fact
A PT needs to have insurance coverage when taking parental leave, even though they are not practicing.
Is this a myth or a fact?
