Address Boundary Violations Early to Prevent Problems Later
Strong professional boundaries are essential to safe, effective physiotherapy care – and it’s important to address concerns at the first sign of a boundary violation.
This post explores how early, clear conversations protect you, your patient, and the therapeutic relationship. It also provides sample scripts you can use to reset a boundary when a patient crosses a line.
They also answer questions from the audience.
Liability Insurance Reminder
To practice in Ontario, all physiotherapists must have liability insurance that includes:
- a minimum coverage of $5 million for the annual policy period
- a liability limit of at least $5 million per incident
- no additional terms, conditions or exclusions, other than standard
- no deductible
- tail insurance for a minimum of 10 years (for claims made after you stop practicing)
This requirement protects you and your patients.
Remember, it’s your responsibility to ensure you’re covered. If you’re using your employer’s insurance, make sure it meets the requirements.
Myth vs Fact
Depending on where I provide care, the College may require me to carry extra liability insurance.
Is this a myth or a fact?

Case of the Month: Supervision and Patient Safety
Physiotherapists are accountable for all care provided by people working under their supervision. They are also responsible for ensuring all equipment is safe and properly calibrated.
In a new case of the month we look at a physiotherapy appointment that raised serious concerns – not just because a patient was harmed, but because of what happened after.
