Ontario’s As of Right legislation aims to make it easier for physiotherapists and other regulated health professionals licensed in other parts of Canada to start working in Ontario immediately. If you’re a qualified physiotherapist from another province or territory moving to Ontario, you may be able to work while you complete your application with the College.
You may be eligible to apply if:
- You are a registered physiotherapist in another Canadian province or territory with the equivalent of an independent practice certificate.
- You are in good standing with your current regulator and have not been involved in an inquiry or investigation about your practice.
- You have professional liability insurance that meets the College’s requirements.
Things for physiotherapists and their employers to consider:
- The physiotherapist needs to be physically present in Ontario.
- Physiotherapists are required to tell their employer if they are using this pathway.
- Consider contacting third-party payors to make sure they will approve claims for care provided while the physiotherapist waits for registration.
- The physiotherapist’s name will not be listed on the College’s Public Register and they will not receive a registration number until they get their independent practice certificate.
- Any concerns about the practice of the physiotherapist would be redirected to their home jurisdiction. The College will not regulate physiotherapists using this pathway until they are fully registered.
The College will start accepting applications under the As of Right pathway on January 1, 2026.
The full eligibility criteria and registration process will be shared later in December.
