Case of the Month: Ghosted
When leaving a practice, physiotherapists should always ensure there is a plan in place for patients who need ongoing care.
In a new case of the month, we look at what happens when a physiotherapist just disappears – without considering their professional obligations.
Featured Standard: Infection Control
This standard came into effect on February 1, 2025.
It requires physiotherapists to comply with current infection prevention and control best practices to support the health and safety of patients, healthcare providers, themselves, and others.
Top five highlights from the Infection Control Standard:
1. Stay Sharp on Best Practices
Stay current with infection prevention and control practices by pursuing ongoing training and maintaining proficiency in best practices, as relevant to your work.
2. Consistently Apply Routine Practices
Conduct a Point of Care Risk Assessment to determine the necessary precautions and follow up with proper hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene, and personal protective equipment as required.
3. Maintain a Safe and Clean Treatment Environment
Ensure all physiotherapy spaces and equipment are clean and disinfected between patient uses, and that materials and devices are safely disposed of.
4. Handle Equipment with Care
Use, clean, disinfect, and reprocess equipment according to manufacturer specifications, public health policies, and relevant legislation. Keep detailed records for any equipment that you reuse.
5. Know Ontario’s Infection Control Rules
Be familiar with Public Health Ontario guidelines and your workplace safety responsibilities under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Make sure you’ve reviewed the full Infection Control Standard.
Myth vs Fact
Local Public Health Units are a useful resource when looking for information about disease outbreaks and local infection control requirements.
Is this a myth or a fact?

Professional Boundaries and Business Practices Webinars
Every physiotherapist in Ontario should have a strong understanding of professional boundaries and business practices.
That’s why we’ve created two new webinars exploring how to navigate these concepts in your practice – along with real world examples of what not to do.
Typically presented in-person at Ontario universities, these valuable workshops are now available online for physiotherapists who haven’t had the chance to attend one or both of these sessions.
Each webinar is just 20 minutes long and includes a list of resources to further enhance your understanding.
Exam Updates
As you may have heard, there are some important changes happening in the exam space.
These changes will not impact physiotherapists who already have an Independent Practice Certificate, but are important for students and those in the Provisional Practice Class.
Transition to Single Licensure Exam
In January 2026, the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (CAPR) plans to launch a new single licensure exam called the Canadian Physiotherapy Examination (CPTE). This exam will combine the written and clinical components into one exam.
The Board of the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario supports the adoption of CAPR’s new single exam, subject to the development of appropriate transitional provisions. Adopting this single-step exam will change the pathway to become a physiotherapist in Ontario.
Changes to Ontario Clinical Exam Format
Starting in October 2025 the Ontario Clinical Exam will no longer include vignette questions. Instead the exam will be made up of two longer case studies.
It’s important to note that the content and competencies being assessed by the exam are not changing. The move away from vignettes is designed to encourage less repetitive memorization and give candidates the opportunity to demonstrate more in-depth clinical reasoning. Candidates who are registered for an exam sitting in October or January were sent detailed information about his change. That information is also available at the link below.
Mental Health Resources
May is Mental Health Month. If you’re struggling, help is available.
- Find Mental Health Support by exploring this list from the Government of Ontario. It includes distress and crisis services and supports specifically for health care providers.
- Evaluate your work environment with the Healthy Practice Resource from the Healthcare Regulatory Research Institute.
Know what to do if a patient talks to you about abuse, self-harm or suicide. Learn about Strategies to Support Patients at Risk with this resource from the College.
