Application Requirements

For applications to be approved at the staff level, an application must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant was a patient receiving care from a physiotherapist at the time that the sexual abuse is alleged to have occurred
  • The College knows both the name of the patient / applicant and the name of the physiotherapist
  • There is an investigation in progress related to the alleged incident
  • The patient has applied for funding for therapy and counseling to support mental wellness

    AND
  • The proposed therapist / counselor is not a family member
  • The proposed therapist / counselor has no findings of sexual abuse made against them

Therapist/Counsellor Requirements

  • The therapist/counsellor must not be a person with whom you have any family/personal relationship.
  • The therapist/counsellor must not be a person who has at any time or in any jurisdiction been found guilty of professional misconduct of a sexual nature or been found civilly or criminally liable for an act of a similar nature.

Choosing a Therapist/Counsellor

Choosing a therapist or counsellor is an important and personal decision. Patients are asked to choose someone that will be the best fit for them, the College cannot make this decision. The College can provide resources or guidance on how to find a therapist/counsellor. The funding can be used for more than one therapist or counsellor.

Care providers can be a regulated health care professional or non-regulated health care professional. If a patient decides to seek care from a non-regulated health care professional, it is important to know that there is no opportunity to express concern to a regulatory college regarding the care you receive if this becomes an issue.

How Much Funding is Available?

Patients who have been approved for funding for therapy and counselling can receive up to $17,370 over a five-year period. Funds are paid directly to the therapist or counsellor. The funds are intended to be used for treatment required because of the sexual abuse by the physiotherapist.

The five-year period will begin from the day your application is approved. If you file your complaint sometime after the sexual abuse took place and you were paying out of pocket for therapy or counselling, you can request reimbursement.

Requests for retroactive payments or reimbursements for out-of-pocket fees will be reviewed by the Patient Relations Committee.
