Eligibility Criteria to Run as a Candidate in the Board Elections

To run in the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario Board Elections, you must meet all of the eligibility criteria and you must have one eligible physiotherapist from your district nominate you. Please verify your district by checking your postal code and confirm your eligibility and the eligibility of your nominators in the College By-laws.

  • For the Board Elections, you must live in one of the districts up for election
  • You cannot have been a director, officer, committee member, employee or have had a decision-making role in the Ontario Physiotherapy Association (OPA), the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) or similar organizations with a mandate or interests that conflicts with the mandate of the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario in the last 12 months.
  • You have not been found guilty of professional misconduct, incompetence, or to be an incapacitated member at any time in the six years immediately preceding the election.
  • Your certificate of registration has not been revoked or suspended for professional misconduct, incompetence or incapacity at any time in the six years immediately preceding the election.
  • You are not currently the subject of a disciplinary or incapacity proceeding.
  • You are not in default of payment of fees prescribed by any regulation.

College By-laws

You are required to complete an online module before the nominations deadline to learn more about the role of the Board, Board Directors and self-regulation.

You are also required to complete the Values, Behaviours and Competency Assessment before the nominations deadlineThe Assessment is based on the College’s Board and Committee Competency Profile. The objective of the Competency Profile is to ensure that incoming Board Directors possess the foundational behaviours, attributes and skills that all Board Directors need to effectively engage in the work of the Board. 

Board Elections: Important Dates

Nominations Open

Eligible voters receive a secure email in January from a third-party vendor with a link to nominate a peer using the online nomination form. Nominators must be eligible to vote in the electoral district in which they are nominating a peer. 

Nominations Deadline and Candidate Statements, Online Module and Values, Behaviours and Competency Assessment Due

  • Nominations close in February
  • The Candidate Statement Portal closes in February. After being nominated by one physiotherapist peer who is eligible to vote in the candidates electoral district, candidates must complete the nomination form before the nominations deadline. The College will confirm candidates’ eligibility to run. It is best to submit the online nomination form and optional candidate statement well in advance of the nominations deadline. After the nominations deadline, the candidate portal will be closed and the candidate statement will appear as final to voters.
  • The Online Module must be completed before the nominations deadline. Candidates are required to complete an online module to learn more about the role of the Board, Board Directors and self-regulation. 
  • The Values, Behaviours and Competency Assessment must be completed before the nominations deadline.

Withdrawal of Candidacy

Candidates may withdraw their candidacy by notifying the Registrar of the withdrawal in writing in March.

Voting Opens

Voting in the Board Elections opens in March. You are eligible to vote in this election as long as you live in the districts that are up for election.

Election Day (Polls Close)

Polls close on the third Wednesday in April at 2:00 p.m.

Code of Conduct

Board Directors and Non-Board Committee Members are expected to exhibit conduct that is
ethical, civil and lawful, in a manner that is consistent with the nature of the responsibilities of the Board. See Appendix C of the College By-laws.
