New Standards Webinar: Recording Now Available

It was great to see so many of you at the third edition of our New Standards Webinar Series earlier this month. If you missed the webinar, a recording is now available.

The webinar covers the following standards:

• Collaborative Care
• Conflict of Interest
• Dual Practice
• Infection Control

Members of the College’s Practice Advice and Policy teams go over how these standards apply in practice and answer questions from attendees.

Cupping Therapy: What’s Within Physiotherapy Scope in Ontario

Cupping therapy involves using plastic, silicon or glass cups with a vacuum seal to influence the myofascial tissue physiology.

In Ontario, physiotherapists should only use techniques such as dry cupping and oil cupping.

Techniques that involve bloodletting and the use of a scalpel to pierce the skin (such as Hijama or wet cupping) are not within the scope of practice of a physiotherapist and should not be performed.    In this month’s blog, we go over some important things to keep in mind if you plan to use cupping in your practice.

Paid Opportunity: Become An Examiner for the Ontario Clinical Exam

We’re hiring physiotherapists to work as examiners for the Ontario Clinical Exam.

This is a great opportunity for physiotherapists with at least three years experience in the Independent Practice Class to give back to the profession and get paid doing it.

Highlights:

  • Work from home
  • Get paid $65/hour for examining candidates and $54/hour for training activities
  • Commit to being available for at least three exam weekends between October 2025 and October 2026

Curious about what it’s like to be an examiner?

Hear from two examiners in our blog post, Being an Examiner: An Important and Rewarding Role.

Case of the Month: Boundaries Matter

Understanding and respecting professional boundaries is essential to safe and effective physiotherapy care – especially when treatment involves sensitive areas, like in pelvic health care.

In a new case of the month we look at what happens when a physiotherapist crosses the line.

Featured Standard: Advertising and Marketing

This standard came into effect on May 1, 2025 and replaces the previous Advertising Standard.

It requires physiotherapists to engage in advertising, marketing and promotional activities, including through social media, in a manner that is truthful, accurate, and verifiable.

Top five highlights from the Advertising and Marketing Standard:

  1. Avoid Deceptive or Misleading Claims

Do not make unsubstantiated claims, guarantee outcomes, or imply that your services are superior to those of other health providers.

  1. Advertise Within Your Competence

Only advertise services that you are competent to provide. Do not say or imply you are a specialist unless you are authorized by the College to use the specialist title.

  1. Use Incentives and Endorsements Responsibly

Ensure that incentives in your advertising do not promote unnecessary services. Product endorsements must be supported by credible evidence, with any financial relationships transparently disclosed.

  1. Be Transparent when Advertising Free Services

Advertisements for free consultations, assessments, or trial services should clearly state any conditions or limitations. These advertisements should focus only on promoting general education, raising health awareness, or informing the public about available pro-bono care.

  1. Accountability for Advertising Content

You must take reasonable steps to ensure that all advertising and marketing about your services, whether shared by you or others on your behalf, is truthful, accurate, and verifiable. This includes advertising done through social media.

Make sure you’ve reviewed the full Advertising and Marketing Standard.

Myth vs Fact

If a physiotherapist writes a post for their clinic’s social media, it counts as advertising – so it must meet the requirements of the Advertising and Marketing Standard.

Is this a myth or a fact?

Can I offer a free assessment at my clinic as a promotion?

Free Online Course: Confronting Anti-Indigenous Racism in Health Care

Physiotherapists may be interested in this free online course from Athabasca University.

In the Indigenous Health and Wellness, Advocacy, and Allyship course, students can learn about systemic anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination and about strategies for becoming an authentic Indigenous ally. Topics range from what it means to be Indigenous, to specific Calls to Action focused on health care.
