Watch Our New Standards Webinar

Missed our latest new standards webinar earlier this month? A recording is available online.

This edition focused on the Evidence-Informed Practice Standard and the Titles, Credentials, and Specialty Designations Standard. Together, these standards make up Group 2, which came into effect on November 1, 2024.

Staff from the College’s Practice Advice and Policy teams covered how these standards apply in practice and the top highlights from each. They also answered questions from the audience. Learn more about the new standards. Watch the webinar on-demand!

New Blog Post: Understanding Your College Fees

With renewal underway for another year, we often hear from you wondering where your College fees go.

As a self-regulated profession, the College relies on registration and renewal fees to carry out activities that support you in providing high-quality physiotherapy care for patients in Ontario.

In this month’s blog post, we break down how fees are used to cover the growing volume and scope of our work.x

Case of the Month: Patient Waited Almost Two Months for Records

Patients have a right to access their personal health information.

Being able to get a copy of clinical records in a timely matter is important for medical referrals and insurance benefits.

Legally, physiotherapists must respond to record requests within 30 days.

So what happens when this requirement isn’t met? We find out in a new Case of the Month.

Featured Standard: NEW Conflict of Interest

This standard came into effect on February 1, 2025 and replaces the previous Conflict of Interest Standard. It requires physiotherapists identify, avoid or otherwise mitigate, and disclose any real, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest.

Top five highlights from the Conflict of Interest Standard:

  1. Patient Interests Always Come First

Avoid taking actions that could prevent you from prioritizing your patients’ best interests or that could compromise your professional judgement.

  1. Know How to Spot and Address a Conflict of Interest

Be on the lookout for any real, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest, whether involving you directly or someone close to you. Take steps to manage them.

  1. Just Say No to High-Risk Activities

Don’t exchange referrals for profit, agree to receive kickbacks for product sales, or accept incentives for under-treating or over-treating patients. Don’t refer existing patients to your own services without full disclosure and offering alternative options.

  1. Be Transparent about Product Sales

If you sell products, let your patients know that it won’t affect their care if they purchase the products from somewhere else.

  1. Disclose and Mitigate Unavoidable Conflicts

When avoiding a conflict of interest isn’t possible, take steps to mitigate it. Fully disclose the situation to the patient, offer alternative options, and ensure all details are documented clearly and transparently.

Make sure you’ve reviewed the full Conflict of Interest Standard.

Myth vs Fact

I work in a private clinic and we would like to thank our patients who refer others to our business. I’ve heard that providing a gift card to a patient to thank them for the referral is not allowed by PTs.

Is this a myth or a fact?

Practice Advice Question

I work part-time in a community hospital and part-time in a private clinic. Patients are often recommended to continue their physiotherapy care in the community, and we provide them with a list of available clinics in our area.

Can I include my private clinic on the list of available clinics given to patients? Once discharged from hospital, can a patient who I provided care to in hospital continue to work with me in my clinic as an out-patient?

Quality Assurance Contract Role

The College currently has an independent contract role available for a Quality Assurance Report Reviewer. If you meet the requirements for the position and are interested in applying, please send your resumé and cover letter to qualityassurance@collegept.org no later than Friday, March 28, 2025.

Resource: Provide Inclusive Care for Trans Patients

TransHealthTO has a number of resources that can help healthcare providers learn more about the LGBTQ2S+ community with a specific focus on caring for transgender patients.

Learn about practical changes you can make in your clinic or workplace, important terms to know and more.

Last Chance to Complete Boundaries Survey

Students from the University of Toronto Physical Therapy program are inviting Ontario physiotherapists to complete a short survey as part of their research on how physiotherapists recognize and manage professional and sexual boundary violations.

The survey is anonymous and will take around 10 minutes to complete. All questions are optional. All data will be securely housed and analyzed at the University of Toronto.

The students hope to use this research to inform future curriculum and policy development, along with the creation of new resources to support PTs in their practice.

The survey will close on April 13, 2025. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this important research.

Welcome New Registrants

The College would like to welcome our newly registered physiotherapists.
