Board Highlights
Highlights from the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario’s Council Meeting on October 14, 2021
- Council approved the trial use of a consent agenda for the next three Council meetings. A consent agenda is the practice of grouping routine items and reports for information under one agenda item where extensive discussion is not anticipated. Council members can ask that an item be removed from the consent agenda if discussion is required.
- Council approved an Indigenous Land Acknowledgement statement. This statement will be highlighted at the beginning of each Council meeting.
- Council approved the College’s position statement on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).
- Council amended the 2021-22 committee slate by:
- Appointing Richard O’Brien to the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports and Discipline and Fitness to Practise Committees
- Appointing Sharon Gabison to the Registration and Discipline and Fitness to Practise Committees
- Removing Paul Parikh from the Registration Committee
- Council have directed staff to engage the services of a real estate broker to explore future office space needs given that the move to a virtual office has been successful—the goal is to ultimately reduce annual leasing costs.
- Council received an update regarding the clinical exam. They have decided not to:
- Pursue the request for proposal for an organization to develop and administer a national exam as no submission met the needs identified in the proposal.
- Authorize the use of the ACP as an alternative to the national exam. The ACP is an evaluation tool used by clinical practice supervisors for students who are on clinical placements.
- In consideration of next steps Council approved the following recommendations:
- To continue to explore options with CAPR related to the administration of an exam.
- That the Registration Committee be asked to explore exempting individuals from having to successfully complete the national clinical exam.
- That we explore whether the Quality Assurance program could be used as a substitute for the clinical exam.
- Proposed changes to the College’s registration regulation to address situations where the clinical exam is not available.
