About Unregulated Practitoners
It is important that patients know who is delivering their care. In choosing a registered physical therapist the public can be assured that their physiotherapist is qualified to deliver safe, quality care. The College has a Public Register
that provides information about all registered physical therapists in Ontario.
On occasion, individuals who are not physiotherapists may pretend that they are physiotherapists and they may treat patients. This is illegal in Ontario.
Only physiotherapists who are registered with the College can call themselves physiotherapists or physical therapists or use the abbreviation PT. Sometimes another professional may suggest that they are providing physiotherapy. This is not the same as receiving physiotherapy from a registered physical therapist.
When seeking physiotherapy care, ask the provider if your care will be provided by a registered physiotherapist. This will ensure that you have the information that you need to make an informed decision about your care.
On occasion, the College receives calls from members of the public who are able to provide information about an individual who is pretending to be a physiotherapist or physical therapist. The people who are doing this are called unregulated practitioners or referred to as individuals who are holding out. The College investigates each one of these cases.
